In honor of The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 10th Annual Fix A Leak Week, which is taking place this week from March 19th-March 25th, First Street Real Estate would like to share some tips on how to check for water leaks in your home.

Below are some recommended tips from the EPA's website.

1st Step - Determine whether you are wasting water and then identify the source of the leak.

Tips For Identifying Leaks:

  • Take a look at your water meter, before and after no water usage, if you notice any change there probably is a water leak.
  • One way to identify a toilet leak is to place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank, after 10 minutes if any color shows up in the bowl, there is a leak.
  • To check for surface leaks: examine faucet gaskets and pipe fittings for any water on the outside of the pipe.

When taking the necessary steps in identifying and fixing water leaks homeowners can save about 10% on their water bills.
